Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was hospitalized on Monday while attending the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to his office, Peña experienced a “slight indisposition” and is currently undergoing medical evaluations at the Samaritano Hospital. A medical report is expected shortly.

Although Paraguay is not a G20 member, President Peña was invited to the summit by Brazil, the host nation, as part of an initiative to include perspectives from developing countries, particularly Mercosur partners. This year’s G20 summit emphasizes poverty alleviation and climate financing.

Vice President Pedro Alliana addressed concerns about Peña’s condition on social media, assuring that the president is “doing well” and awaiting his test results. Peña, who recently turned 46, assumed office in August 2023 and is the youngest president in Paraguay’s history since the fall of Alfredo Stroessner’s dictatorship in 1989.

The G20 summit continues under Brazil’s leadership, with discussions focused on sustainability and poverty reduction.
